We celebrate 30 years of activities 2015 ! The band had its first concert at jazzclub Fasching in Stockholm 1985. We started out as a rehearsal big-band consisting of freelance musicians doing occasional gigs. It is still a free-lance big-band supported by The Swedish Arts Council and private sponsor Brian Meese.

Our goal is to play swinging modern jazz music based in the tradition but not stuck, with a lot of solos and intricate ensemble playing.

We ́ve had guests like Bob Florence, Bob Brookmeyer, Bob Mintzer, Jim McNeely, Bill Holman, Mike Holober, Phil Wilson, The Yellowjackets, Mel Lewis, Hermeto Pasqual, Juan- José Mosalini, Carlos Franzetti, Susana Rinaldi, Walter Rios, Maria Schneider, Stan Tracey, Pete King, Mike Mower, Norma Winstone, Steve Gray, Jens Winther, Joe Lovano, Dick Oatts, Gary Smulyan, Adam Nussbaum and Monica Zetterlund among others.

The SJO has done numerous radiobroadcasts in Sweden and abroad. Musical projects besides jazz include Tango, Flamenco, Salsa, Fusion. Tours and concerts has taken place in South-Africa, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, USA, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland. The band has released 14 CDs and one LP.

The latest CD on D.O Records “Today” is original music by the band members featuring the band and its soloists. The LP is with legendary vocalist from Sweden, Monica Zetterlund. Among our CD:s you will find, “Dreams” w/ Bob Brookmeyer, “ Live at Fasching” w/ Bob Mintzer, “ Soundbites” w/ Jim McNeely, “Tango” w/ Juan-José Mosalini and Carlos Franzetti. Last years the band has concentrated on doing our own music composed by the band members.

In some cases the music has been arranged by guest arrangers such as Jim McNeely and Mike Abene. On the two albums previous to “today” the music is composed and arranged by the drummer in the band, Jukkis Uotila “SJO plays Uotila“ (KS Jazz) and the bass player, Martin Sjöstedt” In a blink” (Connective Records).

Most band members are bandleaders, jazz soloists, composers/arrangers in their own right.
